In honor of the year that was 2008, we here at Cinematical have once again spent a whole bunch of long, hard-fought hours (days even!) slogging through the best of the best in order to present you with our list of the 25 Hottest of 2008. What were the biggest trends in the entertainment world this year? Which movies made the most money? Alternatively, which films garnered the largest fanbase? Which actor or actress enjoyed the most success? And just because they were big in 2008, does that mean we'll still remember them at the end of 2009? Chipping it to help dissect 2008 were Cinematical's Erik Davis, Scott Weinberg, Eric D. Snider, Monika Bartyzel, Jessica Barnes, Eugine Novikov, William Goss, Jette Kernion and Peter Martin. Just when you thought the year was over ... the lists have just begun. Check out the gallery below (then come back later in the week when we spin it around

As the season marches on, 'for your consideration' ads litter the trades and various awards analysis websites. However, there aren't nearly enough campaigns for the year's worst performances.
You have your obnoxious kids (Jaden Smith in The Day The Earth Stood Still, Logan Lerman in Meet Bill). You have your touched individuals who straddle the line between functional and, ahem, 'full retard' (Sophie Okonedo in The Secret Life of Bees, Omar Benson Miller in Miracle at St. Anna, David Morse in Hounddog). You've got your guys that give 'insane' a bad name (Jason Butler Harner in Changeling, Donny Osmond in College Road Trip), and you've got your girls that give English a bad name (Ahney Her in Gran Torino, Natalya Rudakova in Transporter 3).
Oh, and then there's just about the entire cast of The Happening. (If I had to pick just one person, though, I'd go with the gardener

The ensemble cast of Paper Man has just gained another actor in bloom. Hunter Parrish will join Ryan Reynolds and Lisa Kudrow in the Jeff Daniels vehicle. The young actor has most recently been seen in the musical "Spring Awakenings," and Weeds and will be in the upcoming Zac Effron film, 17 Again. Paper Man will follow an unpublished novelist (Daniels) who reaches middle age. Said novelist is befriended by a young high schooler (Emma Stone), who guides him in his dramatically humorous second adolescence. THR reports that Parrish will play the girl's boyfriend. Other supporting characters include the middle-aged man's wife and imaginary superhero friend. Michelle and Kieran Mulroney are set to direct. This film sounds like the Noah Baumbach version of Meet Bill, plus an imaginary friend. Stay tuned for updates.

I really love First Look Studios because they continuously put out good quality lower budget fare and Meet Bill is no exception to this. Its stand out cast includes Aaron Eckhardt who is the one who should get the Oscar Nod for Dark Knight, Elizabeth Banks who surprises me with her uber hotness and Jessica Alba who for the first time ever proves she is not just a talking set of breasts and can actually act. The premise of this fantastic quirky comedy goes as follows; Bill (Aaron Eckhart) - a doormat if ever there was one. A man reduced to a mere accessory to his family by working a dead ...

Timothy Olyphant is ready to play towards the kitsch. His high cheekbones, willowy frame and fair skin could easily fit in with the Twilight cast, but THR reports that he's just signed on to play victim to some crazy folk in the remake of George Romero's The Crazies. Luckily, he's got a comedic side. After uber-serious roles in the likes of Live Free or Die Hard, and Stop-Loss, Timothy Olyphant has set himself up as falling perfectly into the ominously creepy category. For those of you who did not see Olyphant's best performance this year in Meet Bill, you might not be able to picture him playing towards his comedic side in a kitschy remake. But, for those of you who have, seeing Olyphant ham it up while being chased by Crazies sounds like a whole lot of fun. This remake could be the ticket to getting audiences seeing

News about Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan film franchise has unfolded faster than one of the author's fictional terrorist plots. First came word that Sam Raimi was dropping out of the planned Ryan relaunch, then a report that the film was still a go ahead despite the director's departure. Now, Moviehole reports that The Dark Knight star Aaron Eckhart is being tapped to take over the spy franchise.
"Harrison Ford apparently won’t be getting another look in as Jack Ryan," says the site. "We’re told since this is a complete reboot of the series the studio wants someone new to play the literary hero.
"Rumored to be among the names on that wish list is Aaron Eckhart."
Moviehole states that while no offers have been made, Eckhart is "a name that keeps popping up in relation to the part of Ryan, so someone over [at Paramount] obviously likes him."

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest There isn't a whole lot to say about One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest that hasn't already been said. You can look back at just about every single Jack Nicholson performance and find reason to call one or the other his best. Cuckoo's Nest is without a doubt one of his best. Warner didn't send me a review copy of this film so I can't tell you how the transfer looks, how it sounds or what the special features are like, but knowing them it's going to be impressive. Very rarely am I ever not impressed by a Warner special edition release and I highly doubt they would mess this one up. I still remember the first time I watched this movie and there is one line that gets me still to this day, "Hit me,

This week is something of a nostalgia trip with a period comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr. and a concert documentary about a group of men who, by all the laws of man and nature, should not still be alive and walking around.

After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short. In French with subtitles.
