Parents Guide for
The Abyss (1989) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this new feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes .
Visit our Parents Guide Help to learn more

Sex & Nudity

During a scene showing CPR and shock paddles, one of the women has her shirt ripped off revealing a glimpse of her breasts including nipples. The camera does not linger on her breasts, and the entire time, she is surrounded by other people, so someone not paying very close attention is likely to miss it. There are hazy pictures of revealing women on a bathroom door. No sexual situations.

Violence & Gore

The film depicts a brutal, though not bloody, fight between 3 men involving strangulation, a knife and a gun. At another point, we are shown dead, though not rotting, corpses in a sunken submarine. There is also a violent fight between two mini-subs that involves much crashing and destruction of equipment.

Profanity

1 "F" word, more than 12 "B**th" and Sh*t quite often.

Frequent use of sh*t and b*tch words by characters under tense situations.

None

This film features many scenes involving the claustrophobic conditions involved in undersea diving and submarines. In the opening, we watch as a submarine filled with navy men gets flooded and sinks. In one of the film's most intense scenes, a woman decides to let herself "die" of drowning hoping that she will later be revived. In another scene a man gets killed when his submarine implodes due to water pressure, we are shown his frightened face as he realizes what his fate is.
